I am an artist. I make political and social commentary about inequality. My goal is to inform by provocation—without being didactic or “if this, then that.” I want to stimulate interest, to give just enough information for viewers to search for more, defining their own conclusions. I am a conceptual artist. I struggle with the idea of calling myself an activist. It’s not a title I readily use. With most projects, I’m working through my own frustrations and contradictions about a given subject. The result is sometimes a clear crusade for or against. Other times it’s less conclusive and more about my inability to reconcile it. I’m conflicted about whether or not my work contributes to “poverty porn.” Who profits? Me, the subject or the viewer/buyer? How does this work fit into the world of commercial art (or art for profit)? This is my current struggle. I am an artist.
